Los Compadres

A 1970s revival in interior design — from brass accents to Brutalist art — wraps a welcoming arm around this entire neighborhood. Some have likened Los Compadres to a “Brady Bunch experience” due to its high concentration of ’70s ranch-style homes. This quiet neighborhood, adjacent to Deepwell, offers a superb location at a fantastic value. It sits along the city’s southern stretch off Palm Canyon Drive, easy for residents to swiftly reach the heart of Palm Springs or drive down the valley. Homes also tend to offer a roomier footprint than those set in strictly midcentury modern neighborhoods. Los Compadres (meaning “the friends”) dates to 1941 with the founding of Los Compadres Stables and Riding Club. Rodeos, Western fashion, and horseback riding through the canyons and foothills were a mainstay of the city’s often-overlooked cowboy culture. What began in the 1930s thrived for decades, especially with real cowboys like Frank Bogert and Gene Autry as prominent citizens. Los Compadres members enjoyed monthly chuck wagon breakfasts, moonlit rides, and Western parties and dances. Nearby Smoke Tree Ranch promoted the same Wild West quality of life with even more celebrity panache.
